Google's green commitment

As usual, Google is not short of surprises with new announcement, but their recent disclosure of green initatives is nothing short of impressive (http://www.google.com/corporate/green/energy/).

They commit to being carbon neutral as of 2007 and beyond. Given their energy consumption in the hosting business, this is no small feat. They say they will reduce energy consumption by leveraging more efficient technology, use clean energy sources where possible and carbon offset the rest. A very viable approach. Workday is currently primarily offsetting our carbon footprint with credits from renewablechoice.com.

It would be interesting to explore how to drastically reduce the energy we are consuming in the first place. For that, http://www.climatesaverscomputing.org/ seems like an interesting starting point. I am not sure what Energy Star rating our current laptop and server equipment has, but we could check this. It might be interesting to join this initiative and get credit for our efficient equipment alongside many other member companies.
