IT's green contribution

As more and more leading IT companies engage in green initiatives, it becomes clear that this is not only good marketing for them, but is also financially very viable. The financial win is typically linked to lowered cost on some level, but in InfoWorld's series on sustainable IT a recent article proposed a different thought.

They predict that there is a market to develop a next-generation power-grid, better managed by smart IT, fed by renewable sources. Our current electricity grid is definitely not built for our ever growing power needs. The distribution is inefficient and the sourcing non-competitive. Information technology can and should help break this old mold and provide and much optimized power grid. The rewards for the climate crisis could be immense...
